Chavez has been doing a bunch of bilateral energy deals in the South of Latin America:
Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay.
While this is happening, President Lula of Brazil is heading to the Northern countries of Latin America in order to push a number of deals in Ethanol fuels.
Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
For those who haven't been keeping tabs, this is how the power struggle is unfolding: while Chavez has been growing and exerting more and more influence, the US has been playing the Brazil-card, tying future fuels to US deals and trying to isolate Chavez by handing deals, influence and power to Brazil, the continents largest economy.
Meanwhile, Gwalgen has been combing news sites for info on how Venezuala's economy is actually doing. Both general American economists (the kind that give their kids Adam Smith ties for Xmas) and the author of Confessions of an Economic Hitman (which I just finished reading) think Chavez is an economic disaster, but I can't find a good, in-depth, trustworthy account of how the Venezuelan economy and welfare state are doing. All I could find was this section on Wikipedia.
Any ideas?
