The press has been giving good score to first-nations issues for the past few weeks. This basically means that they have not been outright lying or hiding the shame of Canada's second class citizens. Well, many of the press core has, but not these two instances.
In the first, the Ipperwash inquiry actually let the hammer fall on Mike Harris, Ontario Conservatives and the OPP. "Judge Linden found that Mr. Harris indeed said "I want the fucking Indians out of the park" shortly before the shooting - clearly rejecting the former premier's sworn testimony."
Meanwhile, the frankest editorial I've ever read came out of the pages of the Owen Sound Sun Times. It begins with the following lines:
"Canada is a an apartheid state. Our laws and institutions systematically keep aboriginal people poor, apart and oppressed. The Indian Act, and the racist mindset at its heart, should have been abolished long ago. The fact that it remains in place is a national disgrace."
