Kurdistan is widely believed to be the worlds largest 'nation' without a state to call it's own. Being split between Iraq and Turkey, the lastest wars in the region have been strongly fueling the independence movement.
I've heard rumours that Kurdist nationalists have apparently been the cause of a lot of stuff in the region including Turkish support for the war in Iraq as well as assasination attempts against the recently departed Hussein.
This story in the Asia Times talks about Turkish attempts to stop the Iraqi province of Kirkuk from joining the Kurdish autonomous region.
