The prophetic musings of the ol'-fashioned role playing game Shadowrun (incidently one of my favorite videogames of all time) are getting closer and closer to fruition. In the game, around 2050, the US and Canada fuse to create the United Canadian American States. I won;t dwell on the game but it was apparently a sham disaster that was created in order to create the political capital for the fusing to take place.
A friend of mine once told me about a rumour that documents existed that stated that this was to be a goal of the Mulroney government years ago and the idea has been actively pushed by academic right-wingers such as Tom Velk. The belief, besides a fetishistic covetting of the US, is that the US and Canada were "prevented" from forming a union before Confederation because of fears by the UK of US dominance. It goes therefore that a union would bode well for both countries asserting their dominance in the world stage.
It's a scary proposotion for those who think the US is both a cultural and democratic disgrace as well as an economic time-bomb. Murray Dobson explores the theme in today's Tyee, while I did a story on this subject in the Dominion last year.
