"Some funky karma, man"

A couple weird bits from Gwalgen's non-internet news empire:

1. I awoke this morning with a couple people in my house who live in the same building where 6 people were found dead yesterday. Apart from being floored that this is going on in their apartment they mentioned that the cops initiated a lock down in their place similar to a scene from 1984. When the police were to inform everyone, they did not go door to door, but instead jerry-rigged the fire alarm system so the speaker which normally goes "beep-beep" now went "Attention all! There will be a mandatory lock-down of the building for at least 1.5 hours..."

Also, they have been amazed at how much media whoring is going on. Apparently, the gang at CanWest is looking for ANY information related to ANYTHING that they can report on this story, using even the flimsiest connections to drug crime (some drug guy used to live in the building) to write a story.

2. A guy staying at my shelter throws out a bit of history in yet another example of the intelligence level in the DTES. He informed me that Oppenheimer park, a well-known public park in the city, is, naturally named after one of the dudes which invented the atomic bomb. What I never knew, and what he told me is that the largest Japanese festival in North America (unverified) also happens to occur every year in the same park. How's that for irony?
