Still Shattering like Glass

Kosovo is on the road to possibly separating from Serbia making it the final possible province to get indpendence from the Former Yugoslavia since Montenegro split away recently. It seems the move is naturally generating a lot of resentment amongst Serbs who make up a minority in Kosovo and are upset that they may lose yet another province.

Separation was opposed strongly by the Serbian Radical Party who got the most seats in the last Serbian election, but who have been isolated out of parliament. The leader of the party is currently filling in for the now-deceased Milosevic, standing on trail for war crimes.

I know many Albanians from Norway who can tell you in no uncertain terms that their terrortory has been under constant war for the last 1000 years while they got majorly fucked in post the post WW periods losing land to almost every country surrounding them. They also suffered major atrocity during the break-up of Yugoslavia at the hands of army commanders.

However, what I've been finding interesting is that the UN seems to be supporting the independence of Kosovo which most of the world, I believe, would support. A very interesting and intruiging 5-part series was done by Dru Oja Jay, Editor-in-Cheif of the Dominion which catalouges the fact that Serbs and Milosevic may not have been as responsible for the war as has been argued. In fact, argues Jay, the main cause for the NATO bombing and intervention may have been a force which has caused a number of wars in the past 20 years: capitalism.
