What a fantastic news day!
Both the Dominion and Zmag are covering the phenomenon of Canada spying on it's own people (mostly Muslims) and in case you needed more evidence that we are turning into the US look no further than our allowance of torturing prisoners.
Speaking of the US, it seems that it is easy to document how close they are to turing into a fascist dictatorship. Naomi Wolf shows how it's happening in only 10 easy steps.
Before turning our attention to other parts of the globe, I'd thought I'd treat you all to some personal/ local news. First, Titus Gregory has a great rundown of corruption at the Canadian federation of students. In BC, 4 CFS schools have gotten into hideous financial trouble recently, with former/current CFS-BC staffers wrapped up in court. Titus has apparently learned that not all is well with CFS-BC auditing responsibilities, as he documents here.
Second, the Tyee has a great story which chronicles the history of the Fraser river/Sto:lo nation getting screwed 'royally' since 1867.
Third, the bastards at the Tyee decided not to run my story cause these stupid former ministers and leadership candidates from the CP did one on the same subject. Boo! Since when does David Orchard trump my writing style?
Anyways, to South America where right-wing(ish) Ecuadorian MP's were reinstated after the left-wing government fired them all for trying to block a referendum on political reform. The judges who tried to reinstate them a couple days ago, were fired by the Congress today. Meanwhile Mexico City is having an intense debate around abortion (now legalized), which is quite interesting. And the Mapuches of Argentina are having a hell of a time getting the fuckers known as United Colours of Benetton off their land. I guess they know how the first-nations who had to deal with the Hudson's Bay company must have felt.
In Turkey, a great interview was done with a guy named Amberin Zaman on the countries recent political developments around the Armenian genocide; the Asian Times has a good article on the global arms bazaar; while Australia is about to get bitten in the ass by global warming possibly destroying 40 per cent of their agricultural production.
