I'm back.
For the month of July, posts have been pretty dry mainly due to the fact that I was working my ass off at the shelter during days. Gone were the lulls of Graveyard shift where scraping the bottom of the news barrel turned into time-occupying blog posts. These were the days when I was living things worth blogging about. Anyways, now that that's over, we return.
Day shift at the shelter is a whole different ball of wax. Apart from actually being able to leave the building on break, the pace is always running high. You have to clean rooms everyday, call welfare workers and doctors, bitch and moan to evil real-estate developers and real arrogant government fucks as well as serve two meals and keep a log of everything important which has happened. You come home exhausted from working as opposed to working graveyard. It was great experience working with the staff and learning about the patch-work quilt of services in the DTES, like the fact that our Coastal Health Authority has no qualms about charging a crippled Quebecois polio victim on wlefare, $169 for using an ambulance. Or that a common wait on the BC social housing list can be 10 years. Or that welfare people can arbitrarily not release money to you if you're an asshole, and welfare workers don't recieve any training to tell the difference between a genuine asshole and someone who's socially fucked due to stress/mental illness/drug addiction.
It's nice to be back on graves, where the pace is slower but where someone took a swing at me within the first hour.
Anyways, it looks like a job like mine will be solidified thank to our favorite Vancouver mayor who decided that all the shitty and weak committments to social housing will be dropped anyways. Thanks Sam.
Ok, Ok. Like me and everyone else didn't see this coming from...oh, say...4 years away.
