As far as bad news goes, in the ongoing attempt to make 'poverty' and 'homelessness' a 'crime', the City of Vancouver will be locking dumpsters to prevent people from 'binning' or sifting through dumpsters for bottles and other valuable refuse. Could this get anymore heartless? Why not just get it over with and make it a crime to earn less than $8,000 a year?
Speaking of poverty, it looks like the US is experiencing a record level of poverty or more specifically, severe poverty than ever before. This is despite a supposed huge economic boom. To boot, Canada's rich-poor gap is at a 3 decade high, proving that once and for all, labour got its ass-kiced by neo-liberals.
This may explain why, from the rich-side, Talisman energy, who reaped the rewards of helping kill many Sudanese, is also rolling in bed of profit worth $2 billion: a new record. Way to go assholes! It may also explain why, from the poor side, the new and improved Liberals have not backed anti-scab legislation, while the Conservatives are kicking their ass in the polls.
But enough bad news. Active resistance by Caledonia Six-nations protesters had its one year anniversary recently, with victories including the government buying the land from the developer and the feds dealing with the council of Six-nations for the first time in history.
Meanwhile, across the pond, Danish activists are engaging in violent protests in response to a bunch of squatters getting violently evicted after years of fallow-space occupation. I was involved in something similar in Norway, with 2 arrested. Sympathy protests have popped up all over: from Olso and Copenhagen to almost every major city in Europe, even Turkey.
