Union Dues and Dont's

Union issues can be varied though we often forget that in Canada and BC where big union issues tend to look like a work stoppage or general strike.

In Africa a lot of labour action takes place in almost every country I follow. The big difference there is that most action seems to center around getting paid at all, in countries where dollars tend to be very limited. These days in Sudan, translators are on strike after having not been paid for 3 months.

On a stranger front, though it tends to get forgotten in the mayhem of stupidity, the NHL players association/union is in the midst of a major turmoil right now. Allegations are being thrown around regarding transparency when it was learned that the president had been reading player e-mails.

A Vancouver Canuck player by the name of Trevor Linden used to be the president of the players union for a long time and stepped down last year when the owners of various sports arenas muscled the players into accepting a salary cap. Though sports is essentially boring in nature it does command a ridiculous following and amount of attention.

I would love to imagine the kind of power one could generate asking the players of any professional sports team to go on strike if the US went to war. If the Canucks went on strike in favour of the hospital employees union, the government would have folded in 2 days.
