There have been few updates from the shelter in the past little while, mostly due to the lack of change. Things are pretty much the same: lots of violence, abuse and suffering.
Things which I have probably not written about:
-I recently learned that a common thing that dealers do if they do not get paid is to shave the heads of women who owe them, branding them.
-Crack has totally replaced heroin in Vancouver as the drug of choice, though people still inject it so you may not have noticed the shift.
-People who are addicted in the DTES are generally addicted to EVERYTHING, meaning they smoke like chimneys, down coffee like water, and mix the sugar 50/50 with drinks.
-The hardest thing to do in the shelter is to show compassion for the person/people who throw the most abuse at you. In some cases you want to scream at them, but you learn to swallow your pride and reach some kind of zen and you have empathy for their situation.

The Tyee predicts more homeless in Vancouver than athletes for 2010. They also point out that 30% of the homeless population is first-nations, while they make up 2% of the population.
